The large fully serviced picnic shelter has become very popular for large groups. Along with a 2 acre play field adjacent to the shelter, numerous walking trails wind their way through the preserve.

The wetland prairie pockets are the outstanding natural features. These are the headwaters of the Kishwaukee River which flows to Rockford to join the Rock River. Binnie is an excellent location for bird watching, nature study, or seeing wild animals. The hills and dells provide a diversity of habitats.

The 126.7 acres were acquired in 1969 and expanded in 1991 and 2002. A 90 acre parcel was added in 1997 by the Dundee Open Space program. As well as 2002, where the Kane County Forest Preserve acquired 42 acres.
