The 757 acre Muirhead Springs Forest Preserve is situated in the heart of the rapidly developing critical growth band of townships located in central Kane County.

Across the gently rolling terrain are lands that long ago knew prairie flowers and bobolinks. The plow has erased most of the native Illinois landscape here, yet peace and tranquility have a foothold in two places upon this land.

Along Muirhead Road is a respectable grove of majestic old-growth oaks that survived the axeman s hand. This grove attracts spring and fall migrating warblers and is a natural picnicking destination.

In addition to the oak-hickory grove, tranquility is found in the segment of Bowes Creek which meanders gracefully through the southern section of the site. Water roils over cobbles and snags lodged in the stream bed. Dragonflies patrol the air over placid waters that flow to points southeast. Preserving this segment of Bowes Creek is part of a long-range plan to protect watersheds and waterways throughout the County.
