This preserve is located on the rapidly developing western edge of Elgin and South Elgin and is impacted by the drainage transitions from rural to urban. In addition to the creek and associated wetlands the preserve has a mature, Oak woodland that is part of a stable soil peninsula extending into the extensive wetlands north and west of this Hopps Road location. It is also just downstream from the confluence of Fitchie and Otter Creeks. This peninsula is bisected east-west by the I C Railroad and north-south by a major 66' Nicor gas pipeline right of way. However, two underpasses are also here and this is a nexus for Elgin's proposed Otter Creek Trail and the County's greenway corridors. It is also a strategic point for water control. Managing all these factors during the transition will require careful planning and patience.
