This 65-acre site is located at the big bend of the Fox River about 3.5 miles north of St. Charles. When the Forest Preserve District purchased the land from the Sisters of Mercy, they requested the site be named in honor of a Mohawk Indian maiden Kateri Tekakwitha.
The environmental Center is located in the old pavilion. It was conceived by the Forest Preserve with citizen input to be a functional environmental educational facility to serve all of residents of Kane County, children, adults and seniors alike. The Environmental Center has exhibits, a library, a child s Discovery Center and a wildlife viewing room. The old McGuire House has not been developed as yet although it has been used in overflow situations for meetings and storage. The natural features of Tekakwitha include an oak maple forest on the uplands and a second growth forest down below the River s edge.
