 The gravel-sand bottomed Tyler Creek is the centerpiece of this fine example of multipurpose urban open space. The Tyler Creek Preserve along with Elburn, Johnson Mound, and Bliss Woods was the original Forest Preserve District. The city of Elgin now surrounds this once rural setting. Sewer and water are now supplied to the site. Elgin police assist us with patrols and schools use the site for educational purposes year round. Judson College is our down stream neighbor.
The site is characterized by Tyler Creek and its floodplain with Oak-Hickory forests on the steep slopes. The Forest Preserve Staff has begun a habitat restoration program for the site resulting in the appearance of a number of rare plants. The site has been used by the Staff for spring wildflower walks for the enjoyment and education of the public. The Tyler Creek extension of the bike trail was installed in 1991 and has become a popular starting point for trail users.
