Helm Woods Forest Preserve

157B Helm Rd.
Barrington Hills, IL

Description

Wet pockets and vernal pools are found throughout Helm Woods as a result of heavy clay soils and slow drainage. Historically, farming was restricted to the higher points on the property, and the forested area was utilized as pasture. Today, Helm Woods presents a unique ecosystem. Enormous Swamp White Oaks and colorful Wood Ducks take advantage of the standing water. Rare plants such as Shinleaf, Large-seed Sedge, and Buttonbush can also be found here.

Most of the forested area has been designated as an Illinois State Nature Preserve and extensive restoration efforts have been made here to eradicate non-native shrubs.
