Adult Nature Programs
SENIOR STROLL

Seniors are invited to join District naturalists on a pleasant stroll in our natural areas. Each month we visit a different site to learn about the natural and cultural history of the area. The strolls begin at 10 a.m. and last about an hour, with social time and refreshments following the walk. In event of severe weather, call (847) 741-8350 for cancellation information. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring insect repellent and sunscreen. Donations are welcome to cover refreshments. Call (847) 741-8350 to register.

THE LATE GREAT PRAIRIE

Thousands of miles of prairie once stretched across the middle of North America. The complex and biologically diverse prairies were part of a grand biome unique to North America. Only a fraction of this magnificent biome remains. Come explore the prairie remnants in Kane County. You’ll discover first-hand the marvelous mix of plants, animals, and soils in our prairie preserves. Call (847) 741-8350, to register.

HANDS-ON BOTANY

Discover dozens of uses of plants during this three-hour class at Camp Tomo-chi-chi. We’ll begin with an introduction to ethnobotany, the connection between humans and plants in our culture. We’ll head into the field for a primer on plant identification. Back at the lodge, everyone will have a chance try their hand at dye-making from native plants, weaving with leaves and stems, making rope from plant fibers, and mixing herbs for potpourri and aroma therapy. There will be demonstrations and much, much more! Botanical refreshments will be served.

NEW PROGRAM SERIES! 20/30

We’re kicking off a new program series for 20- and 30-somethings in Kane County. These monthly gatherings will include a variety of activities in forest preserves throughout Kane County.

We’ll begin this June with a Fox River Bike Tour on Saturday, June 28. The leisurely and informative bike ride will start at 9:30 a.m. at the parking lot at Tekakwitha Woods in St. Charles. During the 10-mile roundtrip ride on the Fox River Trail, you’ll learn about the history of the bike trail and the ecological features of the river along the way. Participants must provide their own bicycle and helmet. There will be refreshments at the Nature Center following the ride. We’ll conclude at the Nature Center by 11:30 a.m. with refreshments and social time. Register today for any of the following events:

In July, come for a Twilight Hike and Campfire at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles. We’ll meet at the shelter on the north side of Dean Street on Thursday, July 17. Our walk will begin at 8 p.m., and the campfire will follow. We’ll wrap up at 9:30 p.m.

August’s activity will be a Discover the Prairie Hike at the Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia on Sunday, August 24, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. The Illinois prairie is in its prime at this time of year, so come prepared to be amazed!
